A DAY BETWEEN ANCIENT ABBEYS, VINEYARDS AND THE SIGHTS OF THE GREAT WAR
We must say that Nervesa della Battaglia is one of the most surprising stages of the itinerary “Discovering the most beautiful villages in the surrounding of Treviso”, for the landscape, an endless expanse of vineyards, and for the vicissitudes linked to the Great War.
The name evokes the binding of this territory with the war events. Nervesa della Battaglia, in fact, was razed to the ground during the First World War when, after the rout of Caporetto, the front was moved along the Piave. In memory of these facts derives the appellative of “Della Battaglia”.
In Nervesa della Battaglia, however, we not only retraced the events of the Great War, visiting the Military Memorial and the monument dedicated to Francesco Baracca, famous ace of Italian aviation, but we discovered the ruins of the ancient Sant’Eustachio Abbey, up to satisfy our palate with wine tastings in the best cellars. Impossible not to stop at the singular Osteria ai Pioppi, where in addition to eat delicious dishes, we enjoyed the eco-friendly Luna Park, where the attractions are completely operated by hand!
Here is what we suggest you to do and visit in Nervesa della Battaglia.
NOT TO MISS
THE RUINS OF SANT’EUSTACHIO ABBEY
The first monastic settlement dates back to the XI century but its importance grew especially during the domination of the powerful Collalto Counts, when it became an important abbey, a place of pilgrimage, that hosted illustrious people among which Monsignor della Casa, famous for having written the first book on etiquette. In the sixteenth century the abbey and the monastic order were suppressed and from that moment began the decay. The building was damaged during the bombing of the First World War.
Nowdays are visible only ruins but this place is still fascinating, maybe for the panorama above the surrounding countryside or for the silence broken only by the sounds of nature and occasionally by some tractor working the ground.
Useful advice: you can reach the abbey following the ancient path that leaves from the central square in front of San G.Battista Church.
THE MILITARY MEMORIAL
This massive, white tower of 25 meters stands out imposingly in the sky to remember the heroic deeds of the soldiers died during the First World War. To enter you must overcome the huge staircase flanked by some pieces of artillery. Even from here it is possible to admire the surrounding landscape and in particular the course of the river Piave, theater of bloody battles during the Great War.
Useful advice: to reach the Military Memorial, follow the directions from the city center. It is located in Via degli Eroi 2, Nervesa della Battaglia and it is open from Tuesday to Saturday 09.00 – 12.00 14.00 – 17.00. Monday closed.

THINGS TO DO
OSTERIA AI PIOPPI
Needless to say that this is a must stop for younger and older. Discover our experience at Osteria ai Pioppi.
GIUSTI WINE FARMHOUSE
Immersed in lush rows of vines, the main seat of this farm is located in a small rural village of the end of XIX Century that recalls the atmosphere of peasant life in the past. Also these lands saw the fighting of the First World War: the “ex Sigismondi Houses” were in fact the immediate backline of front. The estate, which also include two country houses where to stay in environments full of charm and following the rhythms of the countryside, extends to 75 hectares on the hills of Montello. We suggest this company because it is engaged in environmental sustainability of and in the defense of biodiversity. In the main building, there is also a store, where you can buy local wine and you can access to the observatory, a steel tower from which it is possible to admire the surrounding landscape.
Useful advice: you can access the observatory only if accompanied by the personnel of the company. Contact the number + 39 0422 720198. The main building is located in Via Del Volante 4, Nervesa della Battaglia and the store is open from Monday to Friday, 8.30 to 18.30.
